The following is a statement from Restaurant Opportunities Centers (ROC) United on the tragic shootings in Charleston, South Carolina at the historic Emmanuel AME Church:

In the aftermath of this senseless act of hate and tremendous loss of life, we stand in solidarity with the families of the victims and the people of Charleston.

We implore the mainstream media to do justice by the Charleston community and accurately report this act of violence for what it is — an act of terrorism and a hate crime perpetrated by a white male against people of color in a historically safe space for Charleston’s black community. The mainstream media’s tendency to pathologize and dehumanize communities of color while presuming the individuality of white criminals maintains and reinforces our country’s systemic racism.

As our hearts and minds are with the community of Charleston, we stand with the thousands of people across the country who are committed to ending the injustices of systemic racism and violence against people of color.
