Hi my name is Andrea, I’m 34 years old and I was born and raised in Louisiana. I work in fine dining and I have a brother and sister who work in fine dining as well. I have worked in the fine dining restaurant industry in Philadelphia for 6 years as a pastry Sous chef and pastry supervisor.
One of the memories that really sticks with me is when I was working in one fine dining restaurant my manager was a female, and was not the best manager. One day I overheard some of the male managers talking about how she couldnt get things together. When I asked why she was still a manager, they stated that it was cheaper to keep her around because if they hired a man to do her job, they would have to pay him more. This changed my whole outlook on work and made me realize how hard it was going to be to work in fine dining as a women.
I joined ROC to fight for workplace justice in the industry. It feels like this industry is one of the last places in the workforce where discrimination continues so blatantly. I want to see equal rights and equal pay for all, not based on race or gender and I want to see the restaurant industry promote people based on talents, not based on what they look like.
