Restaurant Opportunities Centers (ROC) United has published “Trump and the National Restaurant Association: Scheming to Undermine Wages, Public Health, and Worker Rights,” an in-depth report on the Trump Administration’s dangerously close relationship with the National Restaurant Association (NRA).
The report shows numerous ways the “other NRA” and the Trump Administration are working to promote a common agenda:
- the nomination of one of the National Restaurant Association’s own member champions and avowed anti-wage worker CEO, Andy Puzder, as Labor Secretary nominee,
- a partnership in trying to repeal health care reform,
- complete silence on the President’s violation of the Emoluments clause of the U.S. Constitution, which put their own members’ businesses at risk, and,
- multiple other direct conflicts of interest that directly reflect the President’s conflicts of interest.
Additionally, the NRA has embraced the Trump Administration’s exclusionary policies attacking women, immigrants, and communities of color, even though the restaurant industry’s workforce is majority women, disproportionately workers of color, and the largest employer of foreign-born workers, including undocumented workers.
The Trump Administration has breathed new life into the NRA’s persistent efforts to keep wages low and workplace policies poor in the restaurant industry. Substantive resistance to the Trump Administration must include a rejection of the NRA’s destructive policies.
