WHO WE ARE: ROC Gulf Coast is a local restaurant workers’ organization founded in 2008 that has over 350 restaurant worker members. We build power and voice for restaurant workers in three major ways:
I. WORKPLACE JUSTICE CAMPAIGNS
We support restaurant workers in the Gulf Coast area who may be facing injustices in their workplace (e.g., discrimination, wage theft, etc.).
II. PROMOTING HIGH ROAD TO PROFITABILITY
We partner with restaurant employers in the Gulf Coast area to promote best management practices. High Road business owners provide employment practices that support workers and unleash their loyalty, creativity, and productivity to make the restaurant successful. Examples of such employment practices include:
- Providing livable wages (reasonable hourly wages, raises, etc.)
- Maintaining a healthy workplace (sick days, vacation, or health insurance)
- Creating career ladders (emphasis on training and an internal promotion process)
We also partner with them to offer our restaurant worker members with FREErestaurant training and job placement services, to help restaurant workers advance to living wage jobs in the industry. We offer the following classes: FOH 101 (Fine Dining, Bartending, and Customer Service) and FOH 201 (Advanced Coursework).
III. RESEARCH AND POLICY WORK
We conducted the most comprehensive research available on the local Gulf Coast area restaurant industry. Our members were trained to conduct more than 500 surveys of their fellow workers. We also conducted more than 30 employer interviews. We published all of this information in our local policy report, Behind the Kitchen Door: Inequality, Instability, and Opportunity in the New Orleans Restaurant Industry. The report was featured in the Louisiana Weekly, February 21, 2010. Through this report, our members discovered that one priority issue for restaurant workers in the New Orleans area is having job security, in the instance of a mandatory evacuation, which pushes our policy work such as Right to Return.
