On November 17, the Executive Director of ROC-United, Saru Jayaraman, led a briefing at the Department of Labor on Gender Pay Equity Issues for Low-wage Women Restaurant Workers. The event was sponsored by the Women’s Bureau and featured Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, Director Sara Manzano-Diaz of the Women’s Bureau, Laine Romero-Alston of the Ford Foundation, and the heads of OSHA and the Wage and Hour Division of the US Department of Labor. The first of four DOL webcasts examining the economic hardships faces by vulnerable workers, the briefing was live streamed over the internet with over 200 participants watching. “Whether you run a company or work in a restaurant, all working people deserve a livable wage, health care and the opportunity to care for their families,” Solis said. She noted that more than 10 million people work in the restaurant industry, and many receive poverty wages and no access to benefits like paid leave to care for a sick parent or child.
