The Restaurant Opportunities Center of Miami (ROC-Miami) is part of the Miami-Dade’s Coalition for Healthy Families and Workplaces, which focuses on protecting and advancing worker’s rights. At the moment we are educating the public and our elected officials on the effects that the Precourt bill HB 655 will have on workers and their families. This bill attempts to overstep Miami-Dade County’s Home Rule by stopping all current and future local living wage and responsible wages ordinances, employee benefits ordinances, and earned sick time.
After many attempts to speak with Representative Eddie Gonzalez who voted in favor of the bill, we decided to visit his office so that he would finally hear directly from the children and workers that would be affected by this bill. We had a good turn out and received positive public support from people walking and driving in the area as they honked in favor and rooted us on when they read our signs and heard what we were demanding both in English and Spanish.
Elected official work for the public, therefore every citizen should feel empowered to reach out to them. We were partially able to achieve our purpose to make ourselves heard. I say this because they heard us well enough to flee the office. Instead of being greeted by staff that would write down our concerns and relay the message to the Representative, we were greeted by an empty office. This is a blatant disrespect towards Miami-Dade citizens!
We will continue with our efforts and we would like you to join us. Please contact your senators and state representatives and tell them to VOTE NO on HB 655. Tell them that local governments should NOT be stripped of their right to provide economic security for Miami-Dade’s working families. Please contact us and we will be happy to provide you with information on how to reach out to your elected officials.
