I worked as a banquet server for 4 years through college. I was lucky enough to make $12 an hour where I worked, but all gratuity left by the guests was collected by the company owner and kept. And I still feel like I was lucky because at least I knew I was walking away with $12 an hour. My roommates worked at traditional restaurants and every month rent was a struggle. I support raising tipped minimum wage because it means that even if tips are stolen, even if you work slow shifts all week, you can still pay rent, you can still afford to eat.
