I have worked in the restaurant industry since I was fourteen. I have bussed tables, delivered, hosted, and waitressed. Soon after my 21st birthday I was offered a job selling shots for a busy sports college bar. I was clearing my tray in the kitchen after close when the owner approached me with a clipboard and said, “now that you work here, I’ll show you how we take alcohol inventory.” I followed him to the basement, he pointed out where a few liquors were stored. We entered a second room also stocked with alcohol, and a lone bar stool. He closed the door and said, “Ok sweetheart tours over.” He aggressively kissed me and touched me. I interjected and said, “I don’t think this is a good idea.” He responded, “You are the one that came down here. Now bend over.” He turned me onto the chair, pulled down my skirt, and with a hand on the back of my neck proceeded to have sex with me. I did not fight back or further argue with him, until he tried to sodomize me and I interjected again, “You can’t do this.” He responded, “I can do whatever I want. And you can take it.” When it was over he pinched my face and said, “You are one kinky little bitch.” The manager, almost on cue, came down at this moment where the owner said, “Don’t worry; I was just giving shot girl a full tour of my bar.” The manager immediately pulled me aside and said, “It’s time for you to go home, now.” And so I dragged myself home humiliated, violated, and degraded. I later came to find that his wife had given birth to his second child only a month before this incident occurred if I didn’t fully convey what a corrupt person he was. Eventually, I quit and got a job as a cocktail waitress in a well-rounded bar in a better area. Flirting, inappropriate comments, questions, and inappropriate “accidental” touching, are common occurrences in a bar or restaurant and can be deferred by being firm, cordial, and alert. However, this incident was shocking and like nothing I ever heard, saw, or experienced before. There should be more laws to prevent people in a position of power taking advantage of their employees.
