A family of four came into work during a rush. The father was ordering for his wife and his two little girls, who appeared to be coming from a dance competition. By the end of the meal, he was furious with how long the food took (in reality, he was waiting for maybe 15 minutes). He asked me why I worked, and I said that I needed to send money home to my parents who were trying to keep up with medical bills since they both have cancer and that I needed to be able to pay for school. He gave me a snarky look and said “I don’t believe you. Why would you send money to your parents? You’re just a no-good server.” I lost my temper and said “Because they both have cancer and I’d rather them stay alive!” He laughed, said “Well, looks like they’re dying sooner than you think!” and put a huge zero through the tip line. I walked to the bathroom and broke down. I don’t get paid enough to deal with people belittling me and every time I get stiffed, I’m paying for it. I’ve been in the industry for almost three years and it’s getting harder and harder to stay, but I can’t find another job because the economy isn’t doing so well.
