Puerto Rico Labor Laws

In 2021, the minimum wage rate for Puerto Rico is $7.25 per hour.

The minimum cash wage payable to employees who receive tips is $2.13 per hour.

Puerto Rico labor laws regarding the payment of overtime are more favorable to workers that the federal overtime laws and require:

  • time and a-half the regular hourly rate be paid for all hours worked over 8 hours per day
  • double time on statutory rest days;
  • double time for hours over 40 per week.

Puerto Rico requires a meal period of 1 hour, after the end of the 3rd but before the beginning of the 6th consecutive hour worked. Double-time pay is required for work during the meal hour or fraction thereof.
