WHAT IS HAPPENING

On October 27, 2021, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced a newly proposed rule, known as the “Heat Injury and Illness Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work Settings” rule, intended to protect indoor and outdoor workers from hazardous heat. This is the first time OSHA has sought standardized heat protections for restaurant kitchens.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

The most impactful way to show your support is by submitting a comment. OSHA is looking to learn more about what it’s like to endure a shift in a hot restaurant kitchen. Your experience working in the restaurant industry is the most important information to convey. The public comment period has now been closed. Check back for updates on this proposal!

SAMPLE COMMENT: Having to work in an incredibly hot workplace is something that is all too common for restaurant workers like myself, particularly for back-of-house cooks who work closely with ovens, grills, and open fire. Working in these conditions is not easy and actually makes our jobs more difficult, as heat exhaustion can negatively impact a worker’s mental and physical health.

As a restaurant worker, I would feel better supported and protected if employers were required to develop and implement a comprehensive excessive heat prevention plan to protect employees from heat-related injuries and illnesses. It is also important that us workers are protected legally when we do have to speak up about any workplace hazards or report health problems on the job without fear of retaliation. I strongly urge OSHA to implement strong heat policies to prevent restaurant kitchens from reaching dangerously hot temperatures.
